I thought you might be interested in the 501(c)(3) we founded. Back twenty years ago my oldest son was tasked with taking his younger brothers out for Halloween. The Trick or Treating took about an hour with the kids going through the neighborhood. Well the boys came back with four times the amount of candy they normally would receive. It turned out the little ones were emptying the basket into their pillow cases. A teaching moment ensued. We ended the sit down with the kids agreeing to give a large portion of their booty to the Boys at Longview Farms. The Boys at Longview were happy to receive the candy.
Longview Farm is a residential facility where young boys from the ages of 12-18 are housed and schooled. What we found is the boys received minimum amount of discretionary items from the Home for Little Wanderers. As you can imagine the money the Home receives form the state is used almost entirely for the education and boarding of these boys. Well, my wife Virginia, saw an opportunity to get the community involved to give presents during the holidays, pizza nights, field trips and the like.
This was twenty years ago and the charity remains strong. Relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged, really does apply here. A learning moment and an opportunity was all it took for our community to help these boys.
